Science in Action for Senior Leaders
One development of our Senior Leadership Team is to connect the seniors with other environmental experts in the community. Pipi and Lizzie from Taupo-nui-a-Tia College have connected with the ecologist Margaret Dickinson to learn about kākābeak. They will help support Margaret to look after some of the rare plants found here in Taupō. They have also taken home some of the seeds to propagate them with the goal to plant them out in the community once large enough. We look forward to seeing what other learning the girls will gain through this project.
Our coordinators, Margaret, Pipi & Lizzie had a fantastic learning experience at Scion Research Institute in early May. Scion scientists showed us around and told us about their amazing research facility, what it is like to work as a scientist, and how the nursery works. They also told us about some of the research that they do and experiments that they had tried. It was fascinating to learn about research into issues such as kauri die back and myrtle rust. We even heard from a Canadian scientist about the differences between growing native trees in Canada and here. Thank you so much Scion and Margaret for supporting community groups and the next generation of scientists!
