Hey, I’m Helmuth Hartung and I represent the Taupō District Council. I got involved with the project because at all levels the Council supports reserves and parks. In my role I support young people and schools so I made a good fit. We like the collaborative approach of a collective impact on our community, both on tamariki and rangatahi but also our natural environment. That’s the area the Council wants to contribute to in terms of staff and resourcing.
The Council brings lots of resources. People with skill sets like Fraser and Andrew do all the environment and biodiversity stuff; then there’s myself in the SLG, where I help develop strategy for Kids Greening Taupō. The Council also helps fund Kids Greening Taupō.
What excites me the most about KGT is the development of students and the opportunities that Kids Greening presents to students. It gives leadership opportunities to students who aren’t so much into sport or kapa haka or religion. Of course, it’s also great that it’s helping the environment.
