Hi, I’m Paul Green and I’m with Project Tongariro, which is the Government’s arm of Greening Taupō. We initiated the project and our job is to look for funds and employ the co-ordinator. We initially began Greening Taupō to help build on the successes at the Wairakei Sanctuary, which tries to make Taupō a better place both for the nature, through planting more trees and creating more places for birds to thrive. We saw a way to help make Taupō better for everyone with the community as a whole rather than trying to do it ourselves.
The kids of today will become the key people in the community in the future. If they’ve had an introduction to the significance of the environment in their learning, and gotten the opportunity to go out and do something practical as well as talking about it, they’ll give it a real sense of significance. The ones who stay in Taupō will really have a feel of those values that are established under the program in the future, it’ll be much better community for it. If they go somewhere else, they’ll bring those benefits with them. It’s an incredible opportunity.
