Snails play an important role in calcium cycling by consuming calcium sources and using it to strengthen their shell. When they are eaten by other creatures further up the food chain this calcium is again recycled by another individual.
Snails and slugs also play a small role in the break down of organic matter in the environment (decomposition). They do this by feeding on a variety of organic matter, and recycling this into soil.
