Seeds! Seeds! Seeds!

Junior class tamariki at St Patrick's Catholic School and Waipahihi Primary learnt all about seeds this term. After a slideshow presentation about seed dispersal and different types of seeds, the children went for a walk outside looking for seeds in their school grounds. They discussed the ones that they found and how they thought they were dispersed.

Then, the tamariki helped prepare this year's Trees for Survival seed that had been kindly collected by local expert Herwi Scheltus. Seeds had to be squished out of berries, pried out of cases, and shaken loose from pods. Then they were sorted and prepared ready to send to the nursery. They’ll come back to the school as seedlings to be potted up near the end of the year.

The children also checked on this year's plants, which are looking great. Some of them need to be trimmed as they are touching the roof of the shade house! These plants will be planted on Mt Tauhara in July with He Akina Limited. Their Trees For Survival programme is sponsored by Hynds.
