Tongariro Corrections Visit

Did you know that many of our plants are grown by the men in Tongariro Prison? Recently, our staff visited the prison nursery to see how it runs, and to thank the men for their work. We also checked out the education programme and supported the prison educator by running a couple of lessons with the men. They showed us the wetland restoration that they have been proudly doing inside the prison grounds and we had a look at the freshwater macroinvertebrates in the stream there. We did a wetland experiment to explain how wetlands work, and talked about introduced and native species. They also showed us some of the fantastic recycling programmes that they have running inside the prison and the ways that they are learning skills, while giving back to the community. It was a great day of learning and knowledge sharing for all of us.
