2019 at a glance…

Our very own Sian Moffit received the Forest and Bird Te Kaiārahi Rangatahi o te Taiao Youth Award for engaging young people in conservation.

I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to fly down to Wellington to attend a Forest & Bird conference, dinner and Youth Hui. These were spread over two days (Saturday and Sunday) with lots of action, fun and learning packed into both days.

If you are a year 6 to 13 (or equivalent age) Taupō youth, you are welcome to apply for a position on our 2019 Kids Greening Taupō Student Leadership Team.

Following the completion of a three-year pilot, the 2018 school year saw the Kids Greening Taupō programme expanded to four kindergartens and eight schools, significantly increasing the number of teachers, students and wider whanau members actively working towards the vision of Greening Taupō.

Our ancestors were not aware that their actions would cause harm to the environment. Centuries ago, nobody could have predicted that clearing land of its natural vegetative cover and introducing foreign species could be so detrimental to our ecosystem. If they knew the outcomes, would they have still made the same decisions?

Kids Greening Taupo's first Community Planting Day is this Saturday, 12 August 2017.

Last week Taupo Primary Years 2 and 3 classes started a new learning unit called Taupo—Our Place.
